FANTASTIC WEEKEND AT CONNACHT INDOORS

Congratulations to all our athletes who performed so well at last weekend’s Western Region Connacht Indoors in the AIT International Arena in Athlone. It was an exhausting but uplifting two days of competition and all our athletes came back home enthused after some great displays.

We started on Saturday with our U12 & U13 athletes and it was a day that captured both the highs and lows of our sport. The highs were two medals for Gerard Murtagh, second in the U13 Long Jump with a great new personal best of 4.33m and third in the 60m, again with another pb of 8.52.

Alan Beirne made his Connacht debut and it came so close to a medal as he finished fourth in the U12 60m in a great time of 9.17, just 0.02 of a second off the bronze. However, there is some consolation as his fourth place qualified him for the Nationals.

Our two U13 relays had a bit of misfortune as Roisin Kelleher took a very bad fall in her race while the baton hit the deck in the boys race but we know both teams will be back.

On Sunday, we had a fantastic day that started off with a brilliant performance from our U14 team of Patrick Charles, Shane Finn, Cian Mollohan and Toyosi Fagbo who were so dominant that Toyosi had time to look around on the final leg and ease down.

We’d get in trouble if we started listing everyone but we had gold medal winning performances from Sibeal Reynolds (U19 60m & Long Jump), Toyosi Fagbo (U14 60m), Clodagh Sheerin (U17 200m) and Cathal McElgunn (Senior 400m) while there were some fabulous displays from Alannah McGuinness, Lauren Reynolds, Sophie McCabe and Niall Sheerin.
It was also great to see so many people make their debuts in Connacht competition no more so than our U18 Boys team of Oisin O’Dowd, Brian Holohan, John O’Beirne and Niall Sheerin, of whom Brian, John & Niall were running their first ever competitions. It was the same too for Seniors Fergal Guihen and Luke Mollohan which shows it is never too late to start.

One special mention must go to Gerard O’Donnell - it is not often that we have a National Senior medalist compete in the Connachts for us but apart from running a time of 22.24, a time that ranks him 16th in Ireland over 200m this year, the time and advice Gerard gave to all our club members is certainly something that will inspire them over the coming weeks, months and years.

Thanks to all the parents who drove down on both days to cheer on all our athletes, it was very noticeable from the track. Special thanks to Alice Lynott, Siobhan Murtagh, Diane Charles, Mary O’Brien and Jenny McCabe for all their work outside the track. Well done also to Siobhan Whelan, John Connolly and Mary O’Donnell for their officiating work over the weekend.

And finally, thanks to all our athletes - it is not just the performances but the way they helped and supported each other over the two days that is the most inspirational aspect of the weekend for the coaches. Well done all.
