CARRICK AC JUVENILES RETURN TO TRAINING

We are delighted to announce that Juvenile training for existing members, both primary and post-primary, will be returning in the coming weeks.

To help us organise our training sessions and the numbers that can be safely accommodated under Covid guidelines, we are asking any the parents of any existing member intending on returning to training to fill out the attached online link below.

Groups will be organised into the following groups: (Days, times & venues will be notified to parents as soon as we have final figures:
  • U11: Born 2010
  • U12: Born 2009
  • U13: Born 2008
  • Born 2007 and older
We are also asking that a parent of each member supply a mobile phone number so that we can organise group communications through WhatsApp. This will enable us to distribute a weekly link to a health questionnaire for each child attending each training session and a weekly attendance sheet.

This is an essential part of our plan to return to training in a safe environment so we would please ask that all parents please fill out the form with their phone number to enable WhatsApp group messaging as soon as possible.

Thanks very much and we look forward to seeing everyone in the coming weeks

CARRICK AC JUVENILES RETURN TO TRAINING

We in Carrick-on-Shannon Athletic Club are in the process of drawing up our plans for a return to training of our members in early to mid October but we will need your help.

Under current Government guidelines as they currently stand to prevent the transmission of Covid-19, training athletes indoors is simply not practical and as the Sports Complex will not be available due to its use for classrooms, our Primary School groups will be moving outdoors over the winter.

This will mean that our athletes will be divided into different groups based on the year of their birth so that we can comply with Government regulations on group sizes. These training sessions may take place at different times and different venues to what we are normally used to, but we are trying to accommodate our members, our coaches and comply with the Government regulations.

Unfortunately, with the logistics of trying to organise different sessions at various times and at different venues, we will be restricting our primary school group sessions to fully registered club members born in the years 2007, 2008, 2009 & 2010 and we CANNOT take in any new members before the end of the athletic year on December 31. The situation regarding new members will be reviewed in January.

All of these measures are subject to whatever Government restrictions/Athletics Ireland guidelines are in place at the time but we are in the process of trying to determine how many members want to attend training, what venues we can use and what help we can get to organise the sessions.

We would ask the parents of our primary school members to inform our coaches and officials if their child will be returning to outdoor training.

More importantly, we will need more help than ever before from parents at training - we will need people willing to help our experienced teams of coaches with practical coaching (courses will be arranged by the club) and we need volunteers to help with the administrative work around contact tracing and the collection of fees and Covid-19 Questionnaires.

Unless we get extra help to assist us, it is unlikely that we will be able to hold any Primary School group training this year due to the restrictions and workload involved for our volunteers.

For our Post Primary group, we make the same request so that we can finalise if we need to have separate training nights for the various activity groups: i.e. sprint or distance running.

Please contact us at connollyjohnb@gmail.com if you are available to help us or via the WhatsApp group for your child’s training group before Tuesday, September 22, at 5pm.

We look forward to hearing from you.

CLUB ACTIVITIES CANCELLED

In light of advice from Athletics Ireland and the Government, Carrick-on-Shannon Athletic Club has taken the decision to cancel all official club training until March 29, in line with the guidelines.

Athletics Ireland issued a statement earlier today cancelling all official Athletics Ireland competitions and events and this would include approved Athletics Ireland Road Races.

Our Juvenile members should note that this will include the Athletics Ireland National Indoor Championships and the Sports Hall Finals organised by the Leitrim Sports Partnership.

Club members may continue to train by themselves but as a club, we will not be holding any official group training sessions until such time as we are advised it is safe to do so.

We urge all our members and their families to follow the guidelines issued by the HSE.

The full Athletics Ireland statement is below:

Athletics Ireland continues to closely monitor the coronavirus outbreak and the advice from the National Public Health Emergency Team and the HSE. The health and safety of the Athletics community is our priority and we are determined to be calm, calculated and proactive regarding precautions to limit the spread of the Coronavirus (COVID-19).

As announced by An Taoiseach this morning the following measures will come into effect from tomorrow morning until the 29th March, 2020.

  • schools, colleges and childcare facilities will close from tomorrow (Friday)
  • Indoor mass gatherings of 100 people or more and outdoor mass gatherings of more than 500 people should be cancelled

Where it is possible to work remotely people should do so. Public transport will continue and shops will continue to remain open. Mr Varadkar said we need the public and businesses to take a sensible approach.

Athletics Ireland is guided by this expert HSE advice and we will physically close our office from tomorrow morning but all staff will be operating our business from their homes. We are prepared to operate telephones and emails remotely to minimise disruption to our business.

Athletics Ireland is therefore instructing all affiliates to suspend all athletic competitions and events with immediate effect. We understand that this decision will result in inconvenience and disappointment to many athletes, coaches, officials, volunteers and supporters. However, we are sure that all will understand that this decision is taken in the best interests, not just of the athletics community, but of the Country.

Club training is down to the discretion of the individual club, but the recommendation from Athletics Ireland is that club training sessions be cancelled at this time.

The situation is changing rapidly and we will continue to monitor developments and update our website and communication on a daily basis.

MARY MOSTYN RIP

It is with profound sadness that we share the news of the passing of our former coach and official Mary Mostyn. Mary passed away after a long and hard fought battle with illness late on Wednesday evening surrounded by the family she loved so much.

Mary was an integral part of the club from more than 20 years as a coach, parent, athlete and official and indeed, the entire Mostyn family from Brian through Linda, Denise and Colin all competed with distinction for the club, Linda one of our members to have worn the Green vest of Ireland in competition.

Her contribution to the success of the club cannot be overstated and literally hundreds of children from Carrick-on-Shannon and the surrounding areas passed through her care over the years.

It was not just our club that benefitted from Mary's voluntary work as she was also heavily involved in Leitrim Community Games, serving as County Secretary for a number of years, while she was also the Leitrim organiser of the People In Need Telethon during the nineties. In recent years, Mary was one of the driving forces in the Carrick Trad Group and her loss will be keenly felt by that group.

To Mary's husband Brian, her children Linda, Denise & Colin, her grandchildren, sons and daughter-in-law and her many, many friends, we offer our deepest condolences. May Mary Rest In Peace

The following are the funeral arrangements for Mary:

Sadly missed by her husband Brian, children Linda, Denise and Colin, sons-in-law Paddy and Tomas, daughter-in-law Amy, beloved grandchildren, Charlie, Harvey, Jarlath and Senan, brothers John and Martin, sisters Anastasia and Josephine, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, relatives, dear students and friends at Carrick Trad and Carrick AC, neighbours and a wide circle of friends.

Rest in Peace
