CONNACHT TEAM GAMES RESULTS

Congratulations to all our athletes who performed so well at the Connacht Team Games in Athlone IT on Saturday July 10.

For many of them, it was a first experience competing at this level, daunting as that is but reports say that they enjoyed their day and are looking forward to many more days wearing the royal blue of Carrick AC and competing at Connacht.

A special congratulations to Ornaith Guckian and Eleanor Reilly who finished third in the U10 Girls 500m race behind Moy Valley and Castlebar AC - they have now qualified for their first All-Irelands which will be held in August so we wish them the best of luck as they prepare for the big event.

A special thank you to all the parents who brought out athletes to Athlone - in these tough times of Covid, it was great that so many were willing to bring their children to compete.

A very special thanks to Siobhan Murtagh, Michelle Keenehan and Aisling O'Hart who helped look after our athletes in Athlone and represented the club as officials on the day. We'd be lost without you.

We must also thank Connacht Athletics for organising the event - not an easy thing to do with all the restrictions and limits on competitors and spectators but what a great day for the future generations of Connacht athletics stars - who knows, we might have seen a future Gerard O'Donnell, Eanna Madden, Cillian Greene or Robert McDonnell in action in Athlone today!

CONNACHT U9, 10 & 11 TEAM GAMES AND U12 to U14 QUALIFIERS

Well done to all our young athletes who took part in last Wednesday's Leitrim Athletics U9, 10 & 11 Team competition and U12 to U14 individual qualifying events.

First, however, we would like to apologise to all those who missed their events through no fault of their own when the schedule of events was altered at short notice. It was beyond the control of the club and we were sorry that so many missed out on their events.

Special thanks to the parents who made the journey to Manorhamilton for the event and all those who helped out on the night.

In the U10 Girls events, Ornaith Guckian and Eleanor Reilly recorded the two fastest times on the day with Ornaith clocking 10.12 and Eleanor 10.56 to win the event with clubmates Farrah O’Dowd (10.80) and Elise Cody (10.88) taking third to also qualify for Connacht.

Farrah & Elise qualified automatically in the Long Jump as did Ornaith & Eleanor in the 600m

In the U10 Boys events, Sean Leaver and Tom Wynne were our only qualifiers as they took third with times of 10.49 & 10.88 respesctively with Donnagh O’Sullivan (11.44) and Eoghan Murtagh (11.62) fifth overall.

Sean and Tom also finished second in the Long Jump with jumps of 3.35m and 2.53m respectively with Eoghan Murtagh (2.40) and Brendan Carey (2.25) fourth and Noah Bosquette (2.10) and Donnagh O’Sullivan (2.25) fifth

In the 500m, Noah Bosquette (1.59.58) and Brendan Carey (2.03.37) finished third to also qualify.

In the U11 Boys, we had a very close one-two in the 60m with Tom Winston (9.82) & Tadhg O’Hart (10.18) just getting the better of Tom Cullen (9.91) and Adam Meaghan (10.18) for first and second. Oisin Keenehan (10.55) and Zack Murtagh (10.82) were fourth with Conor Carey (10.82) and Fionn O’Sullivan (10.70) fifth

In the 600m, Noah Guckian (2.35.64) and Conor Carey (2.19.81) won the event while the Long Jump saw a clean sweep for the club with Adam Meaghan (2.55) and Fionn O’Sullivan (2.15) first ahead of Oisin Keenehan (2.10) and Tadhg O’Hart (2.42) in second and Tom Cullen (1.81) and Tom Winston (2.30) in third.

Our U11 Girls teams of Erin McGuinness & Nicole Atumonyogo did not have to compete in the U11 Team 60m & Long Jump but went straight through to Connacht.

In the individual events, we had a number of qualifiers, some of whom did not have to compete to qualify for Connachts. The list is below but there were some very good runs from Poppy Doherty and Anna Winston in the short sprint and Amy Murtagh in the U14 200m.

Details of the Connacht Championships in Athlone will be available later, we will get word out to our competing athletes.

Training will continue for all those who have qualified for the Connacht events and we wish those who missed out a happy and enjoyable Summer before we see them back at training later in the year.

The remainder of the Carrick AC qualifiers at U12 to U14 level are as follows:

JUVENILE SUMMER TRAINING & CONNACHT/NATIONAL COMPETITION

With Summer finally here, we are coming up on our last training session of the term next Tuesday, June 15.

We want to thank all the athletes for their hard work and compliance with the Covid regulations since we started back, we’ve really enjoyed our time at training over these past few weeks.

With the reopening of the country and the return to normal activities, we have been informed that Connacht Athletics and Athletics Ireland will be holding competition for juvenile athletes this year. However, there will be severe restrictions on numbers allowed to compete at provincial and national level which ultimately means that qualifying for both competitions will be much more restricted.

It will, in all likelihood, mean qualification through County competitions – in the past, the only athletes who needed to qualify to compete in Connacht were those competitors who are U9, U10 and U11 and they competed in a “Team competition” in units of two where their combined scores determined who are the winners.

Leitrim, the county to which Carrick AC is affiliated regardless of whether our members live in Leitrim, Roscommon or Sligo, will also have to hold qualifying competitions for U12, U13, U14, U15 and right up to U19.

To help us organise these championships smoothly, we need to know which members are interested in taking part and if they will be available at the time of the competitions.

We know with the last 12 months that we have had, people are planning on taking holidays over the Summer and these competitions are normally over by the end of June/mid-July so we don’t want to interfere with anyone’s plans or cause any problems for anyone.

Just to let everyone know, the following are the dates for Connacht & All-Ireland competition:

  • Saturday July 10: Connacht U9, 10 & 11 Team Games (U9 is for athletes born in 2013, U10 for athletes born in 2012, U11 for athletes born in 2011)
  • Saturday July 17: Connacht U14 to 19 Track & Field individual (U14 athletes born in 2008)
  • Sunday July 18: Connacht U12 & 13 Track & Field individual (U12 athletes born 2010, U11 athletes born 2011)
  • August 7 & 8: Athletics Ireland U14-U19 Track & Field
  • Saturday August 14: Athletics Ireland U12-19 Track & Field (U12-13 Field events)
  • Saturday August 21: Athletics Ireland U12 & U13 Track & Field and U9, U10 & U11 Team Events

If your child is interested in taking part and attempting to qualify for the Connacht or All-Ireland events, please let us know either via WhatsApp to one of the club coaches or to club secretary John Connolly at connollyjohnb@gmail.com. If you don’t let us know, we will take it that they are not interested in competing.

It is very important that if an athlete is picked for the Team competition, they must be available as it is the combined scores of two athletes, not individual competition – if one member of a selected team does not turn up, the other member cannot compete.

Knowing who wants to compete will enable us to hold training for those athletes and those who qualify for further events.

When we get some clarity as to when the Leitrim qualification events will be held, we will let everyone know as soon as possible.

Thank you and we hope everyone enjoys their Summer.

ADULT GROUP RETURNS TO TRAINING

We are delighted to announce that our Adult training group under the leadership of Graham Allen will be resuming group sessions from this Wednesday, May 12, at 7pm with members meeting up outside Carrick-on-Shannon Sports Complex.

It will be great to get the group back in action but first and foremost, there are a few housekeeping items in relation to membership and Covid-19 precautions.

Anyone who wishes to train with the group MUST be a fully registered and paid up member of the club for 2021. If you have already paid membership, you are fine but anyone else must do so before they can return training for insurance and health questionnaire purposes.

Renewing or joining for new members has never been easier as this year we have moved our registration system to the Athletics Ireland Online Membership System which means that our members will be able to renew their memberships from the comfort of their own home.

Membership costs €35 and the link for the new Club membership portal can be accessed at the following link:  https://membership.athleticsireland.ie/

This new system will allow members access their membership details, update those details if need be, have access to their membership number and enter national championships through the portal if they wish.

Previous members will need their membership number to access the portal. If you cannot access your details online, simply contact Club Secretary John Connolly at connollyjohnb@gmail.com and he will forward to you your membership number so that you can access the portal.

HEALTH QUESTIONNAIRE

With Covid-19 still a real concern, it is imperative that all members comply with public health regulations and Athletics Ireland requirements. This means athletes can only meet in group of 15 (including mentors/coaches) so if there is more than 15 athletes present, they must train in two separate groups.

We would also ask that before and after training, athletes avoid congregating around and that they wear masks when not training - this is to keep everyone safe, sound and still running! All members must fill out a Health Questionnaire before each session.

WHATSAPP GROUP FOR NOTIFICATIONS

To facilitate the distribution of the Health Questionnaire, we will form a new WhatsApp group which will be used to update and organise group training sessions. To join the WhatsApp group, please email us at the above email address with your phone number so that we can add your name to it.

This is an essential part of our plan to return to training in a safe environment so we would please ask that all parents please fill out the form with their phone number to enable WhatsApp group messaging as soon as possible if they have not already done so.

Once we have a better idea of how many athletes are registered and interested in the group sessions, more training sessions will be organised.

Thanks very much and we look forward to seeing everyone on Wednesday

The late Michael O'Brien

It is with profound sadness today that we inform the Carrick-on-Shannon Athletic Club family and the wider athletics community of the passing of our founder, our mentor, our inspiration and our friend Michael O’Brien.

Michael passed away peacefully in the early hours of Tuesday night/Wednesday morning surrounded by the people who meant most in the world to him – his family. To Rose, Mary, Gerry, Fergus and Paul, his grandchildren especially Shane, Brian, Cliona, Enda and Ciaran who all wore the colours of our club, and all his family and friends, the loss is immense and you are all in our thoughts at this time.

Words cannot do justice to what Michael O’Brien meant to our Carrick-on-Shannon AC, they simply can’t but if we can, we can try with the words of one of former chairman John Keenehan who described Michael in many of his addresses to our AGM as simply a legend – never was a word a more apt description for Michael.

One of the original founders of our club way back in 1973, Michael must have filled every role there was to fill in the club. Club Secretary for 25 years, club chairman, church gate collector, Connacht official, starter at Leitrim, Connacht and National events, chief organiser and track marker of the fondly remembered Carrick AC Sports, if there was a job to be done for the Club, Michael did it and did it to perfection because, for Michael, if a job was worth doing, it was worth doing right.

But it is as a coach that generations of Carrick people will remember Michael and it was his greatest love. We can talk of all the All-Ireland medallists and internationals he coached, all the successes he brought to our club but that wouldn’t do justice to Michael, for he was just as proud of the efforts of the youngest child trying their best in their event. Michael had as much time for the greenest novice as he did for the seasoned star.

The High Jump was his speciality and the club’s history of the event reflects the influence of Michael with so many achieving so much under his guidance. His sessions in the complex were a master class in the event and it was no wonder that so many people loved the event thanks to Michael’s tutelage.

In many ways, Michael was a teacher – he taught respect for your event, respect for your opponents, respect for the officials, respect for the rules but most of all Michael had respect for everyone he met. A stickler for abiding by the rules, Michael was one of the best Starting officials we’ve had but he always had the athlete first and foremost in his thoughts.

Michael loved to see Carrick AC athletes compete – he was never prouder than when Gerard O’Donnell representing Ireland at the European Indoors and while he had taken a step back in recent years, the exploits of Gerard, Eanna Madden, Alannah McGuinness, Daire Farrell and the late Joanna Duignan filled him with pride and he had a special bond with Joanna.

It is always a danger mentioning names for the fear of leaving someone out, there are so many who owe so much to Michael, it wouldn’t be possible to list them all but he always described Orla McGuinness as a second daughter while the respect the likes of Siobhan McWeeney, Rachel Carr and Donal Smith, Eadaoin McLoughlin, Sinead McWeeney and so many others had for Michael remains as strong today as it was back then.

To say Carrick AC was Michael’s second family is accurate for he gave so much time and commitment to it right down the years but his love of the sport transferred to his children and grandchildren, Michael coaching his grandson Brian to a high jump medal in the National Juvenile Indoors back in 2015, many, many years after his son Gerry became our club’s first All-Ireland medal back in the 70s. The O’Briens are synonymous with our Club and they followed his lead, Mary serving as our club chairperson for many years while Shane was the latest O’Brien inductee into the All-Ireland medal club when he was a member of our U13 Boys relay team who won a silver medal at the National Indoors in 2018.

To talk of Michael, you can’t but talk of his wife Rose. The two were inseparable, a perfect double act and Rose was just as heavily involved with the Club in the early years, her interest in the athletes every bit as keen as Michaels.

It wasn’t just Carrick AC Michael gave his time to – Community Games played a huge role in his life, again officiating at the National Finals in the long lamented Mosney. He loved his Active Age Group and worked for years with Carrick-on-Shannon Credit Union – continuing a theme of service to the community, one that sums up Michael’s life.

To the officials of Carrick-on-Shannon AC and further afield, Michael was a source of strength, of advice and guidance but most of all, he was great fun. Laughter was a constant when Michael was around and there was never anyone more up for the craic than Michael who was a great friend to us all.  The late Tommy Smith was a great confidante and friend of Michael’s while Mary and Brian Mostyn were lifelong friends of his. Michael felt the loss of Tommy and Mary deeply and I know Brian will miss Michael so much.

Those friends, like Mary O’Donnell Michael O’Hart in particular, will miss him greatly and the sad fact is that so many of us won’t be able to be there to mourn with the O’Brien family when Michael is laid to rest. All we can do is offer our heartfelt sympathy of all our members, past and present, to Rose, Mary, Fergus, Gerry and Paul and the extended O’Brien family and his many, many friends on their great loss, a love we share too.

Words cannot really do justice to Michael but perhaps the best saying is the old Irish saying, we will not see his like again.

Rest In Peace Michael.
